I guess this vignette is sort of inspired by my weekly experiences of taking the bus in LA :)

Walk cycle vignette, created at UCLA for a Flash project. Combination of Photoshop and Flash elements animated within Flash (the walk cycle is not tweened).
I might do a series of these, ‘Monster and Me’ comics or narratives. Pen and ink and photoshop.
This is my submission for Illustration Friday’s Momentum topic. The top image was colored in photoshop. The lower image is my pencil layout.
‘In the searing wastes of Uffernau, they say the gods are silent…until they are fed.’
‘The Gift’ was my second storyboard project for the class ‘Writing for Animation – 181B,’ at UCLA. This board topic required the following: adaptation or original material, communicates without written or spoken language, and presented in a story board format.
This is an original story, inspired by Hector Hugh Munro’s, ‘Sredni Vashtar.’ The main character is ‘Flame Boy’ who displays his emotions through the flame above his head.
From Fall Quarter, 2006.
‘Tea for Two’ was my first storyboard project for the class ‘Writing for Animation – 181B,’ at UCLA. This first board topic required the following: adaptation of published material with verbal content (story, poem, song etc.) presented in a story board format. I chose an adaptation of the song, ‘Tea for Two.’
From Fall Quarter, 2006.
‘Super,’ pen and ink and photoshop. Another personal poster project for the band, Super Furry Animals.
This started off as a pen and ink drawing. However, I wasn’t at all happy with the original drawing so I coloured the pen and ink image in Photoshop. As soon as I started the drawing I knew it wasn’t going to turn out well…so of course it didn’t.
Here’s the original pen and ink drawing.

‘Trychfil, Servant of Death, and a Hapless Grub,’ pen and ink, brush pen and Sakura Microns on Bristol Board, 6″ x 9″
Trychfil is the servant of Death and takes the form of a large mantis like insect. In this image, Trychfil has come to take a poor grub to the underworld.
‘Ysbryd, Prince of Animal Ghosts,’ pen and ink, brush pen and Sakuras on Bristol Board, 6″ x 9″
Like a lot of people I like films, literature and art that tell the stories of dark heroes. I wanted to figure such a hero in one of my pen drawings, so the above drawing is about Prince Ysbryd who roams the animal underworld. I think pen and ink is a great medium for creating darker images.
I may have been inspired to go darker after reading the great article on Camille Rose Garcia in the March issue of Juxtapoz. The interview with her is good and she talks a little about her process; her explanation of her characterization process is briefly explained, but very interesting.
Angie and I also saw two rather dark movies both of which I would recommend: ‘Memory of a killer’ and ‘North Country.’ ‘Memory of a Killer’ is a Belgian crime-thriller that tells the story of Angelo Ledda, a vigilante style dark hero (see Wikipedia reference). Angelo is an elderly hit-man suffering the onset of Alzheimer’s who takes on a hit job that prompts him to turn on his employer. The characters are somewhat typical for this genre, but they have enough twists to become compelling. Another painting derived from some characters and imagery in my sketchbook. This was created with acrylic and Sakura pens on a 9″ x 9″ piece of paper. I was excited to try my new tube of silver acrylic paint; I’ve never used silver or gold before, but have both pigments now. So expect to see some more tests with silver and gold. I also bought some acrylic glazing medium which I also used in this piece.
The original sketch of the character in the middle of the painting can be seen below.
